St. Thomas Aquinas girls and boys sweep GMC Tournament top seeds

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ basketball team will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Greater Middlesex Conference girls’ basketball tournament, while the Trojan boys will be the top seed on the boys’ side. The Red Division Champs were chosen by the seeding committee Thursday morning at the annual gathering at Spotswood High School.

On the girls’ side, Monroe, which split with Aquinas but had a second division loss, picked up the second seed, while Colonia, which won the White Division title this year for its first-ever division title, was third.

Old Bridge was awarded the fourth seed, followed by East Brunswick, Blue Division Champion Middlesex in sixth, South Brunswick seventh, and Gold champ Woodbridge Academy 8th. Seeding rules call for all four division champions to be seeded among the top eight, which get byes through the play-in and preliminary rounds to the round of 16.

On the boys’s side, the top eight seeds went to the White Division champ Aquinas, Red Division winner St. Joseph-Metuchen – which Aquinas beat head-to-head – Colonia and Monroe fourth. In fifth is South Brunswick, followed by Edison, Blue Division winner South Plainfield and Timothy Christian, which has at least a share of the Gold, but has not completed its division schedule yet.

Rounding out the top 16 are Piscataway ninth, followed by South River, East Brunswick and JP Stevens. The 13th team is Old Bridge, followed by Sayreville, Spotswood and Middlesex.
