South Brunswick edged out Monroe, which edged out St. Joseph-Metuchen. That means the Vikings should beat Monroe Thursday night, right?

Not necessarily.

But that’s how wild high school basketball can be, particularly in the last couple of weeks of the regular season, as teams jockey for higher seeds in both the county and state tournaments.

Monday night, South Brunswick avenged a 51-49 loss just nine days ago to the very same Monroe team at their place, picking up a 45-43 home win over the No. 6 Falcons, fueled by 13 points from senior guard Damien Downes.

The win improved the Vikings to 10-5, 7-4 in the Red Division. Monroe dropped to 14-3, 8-3 in the division, and had a nine-game winning streak snapped.
