South Hunterdon facing more than typical “small school” challenges amid pandemic

As small South Hunterdon gets set to face Metuchen Saturday in a “postseason” road game, the Eagles hope their adversity pays off down the lone.

Just 2-4 in the pandemic-shortened regular season, Toby Jefferies’ squad is young. Of the 28 players who will dress Saturday against the Bulldogs, 16 are underclassmen, evenly split between freshmen and sophomores.

But those young players are also getting varsity experience they might not otherwise.

Because the Eagles have so few kids in the program, they couldn’t meet the NJSIAA’s COVID requirement to separate the varsity and jayvee teams, meaning everyone had to play for the big club in 2020.

The South Hunterdon-Metuchen game can be heard Saturday on the “Big Central Game of the Week” powered by Bellamy & Son Paving, with air-time at 12:50 pm and kickoff at 1:00 with Mike Pavlichko on the call from Metuchen High School.
