The South River Rams extended their lead in the 44-year-old rivalry with Spotswood on Saturday with a 35-14 win over the arch rivals on the other side of Route 18.
South River (1-1) got 210 yards passing on a 7-of-10 effort from junior QB Ryan Kurtz, who threw a pair of strikes to Dimere Smith that went for 72- and 77-yards.
The backbreaker was an 80-yard kickoff return by junior Jeffrey Ferriera, which followed a Spotswood score to cut it to 21-7 early in the 4th quarter.
Spotswood’s kick bounced and bounced and trickled out of bounds at the Rams’ 10, prompting a penalty flag. Rams head coach Rich Marchesi opted to make the Chargers rekick, and the 80-yard return followed to wrest momentum right back to South River.
The Rams now lead the all-time series 34-10, though the two schools have split the last ten matchups right down the middle.
