Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano says the Scarlet Knights were having a “real productive summer” when the got the call about the fall season being postponed.
“It was like getting hit by a two-by-four,” Schiano told reporters on a conference call Friday, just a few days after the Big Ten announced that all fall sports in 2020 would be postponed, with an eye toward trying to play in the spring, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grip much of the country.
“I felt bad for the players,” said Schiano, referring to how summer workouts prevented the normal ritual of coming to camp in August . “And my hat’s off to them because they just kept chopping through it. They didn’t moan and groan. This is the hand they were dealt.”
Schiano says when the hammer came down in the fall season, he and his assistants talked with the players, and shared personal stories of adversities.
“This is life, so get used to it,” Schiano says he told the players.
