Vikings 3-0 start faces toughest challenges yet

by Mike Pavlichko

It’s been six years since South Brunswick began a season 3-0.

The year was 2014, and the Vikings – under then-head coach Joe Goerge – rode a perfect 11-0 record into the Central Jersey Group 5 finals against Manalapan, to whom they lost 21-7 at Rutgers.

There won’t be a chance at a state title this year, but South Brunswick has just as good an opportunity to run the table in the regular season, and finish an unbeaten year with two seasons in whatever the 2020 postseason looks like.

But the schedule gets tougher from here on out.

South Brunswick’s first three opponents – Perth Amboy, JP Stevens and East Brunswick – are a combined 1-8 so far, with the Bears holding the lone W.

The next three opponents are a combined 1-8: Monroe (2-1) this Friday, at Old Bridge (3-0) next week, and North Brunswick (3-0) in the regular season finale on Nov. 6th. And those teams are likely to add a few more wins before the regular season is through.

Central Jersey Sports Radio caught up with second-year head coach John Viotto, as well as sophomore QB Vince Jairdullo, who the understudy to talented signal caller Gage Katzenell-Hall in 2019.
