By Saturday, most of the Big Central Conference teams that opened up on Week Zero – the vast majority of the league – had already played. But four more games featuring five BCC teams yielded three wins to wrap up a hectic opening weekend.

Old Bridge came away with a huge victory, dropping Cedar Creek, 21-7, in the Battle of the Beach at Rowan University in Glassboro. The Knights got three touchdown runs (1, 68 and 48) and just under 200 yards rushing on 15 carries from senior quarterback Brody Nugent against a Pirate ballclub our of the West Jersey Football league that went 8-3 last year. The win – coming out of conference – could really boost Old Bridge in terms of potential playoff positioning eight weeks from now, on Cutoff Weekend.

In other action around the league, Delaware Valley opened with a 27-13 win at Metuchen. The Terriers’ defense pitched a first-half shutout as Ben Culberson and Jayden Brown scored in the first quarter on 17- and 51-yard touchdown runs, respectively, to give Del Val a 14-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, they’d add two goals and a 58-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Picardo-Leask. Metuchen got 189 yards passing from quarterback Cam Hayes-Durina in the losing effort.

Manville was a 19-6 winner at Keyport, rolling off 287 yards of offense, all but two of which came on the ground. Senior quarterback Josh D’Ambrosio ran it 11 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the win, in which the Mustangs never trailed. And that makes it two straight season-opening wins over the Red Raiders.

After a busy Thursday, Week Zero football continued in the Big Central – and around the state – Friday night, with 17 league teams in action, and ten of them coming up winners.

One of the more impressive efforts came in Linden, where Elizabeth exploded for 42 first-half points en route to a 42-7 victory over the Tigers, thanks in large part to junior quarterback Arique Fleming’s 253 passing yards and four touchdowns, with a fifth on the ground. It was the biggest margin of victory for the Minutemen since 2018, with all the points coming before halftime, and the second half played with a running clock.

Speaking of big numbers, Montgomery got shutout in last year’s season opener by Hopewell Valley, 42-0. But Friday night, despite giving up 20 straight third-quarter points to Hopewell Valley, the Cougars rallied not once, but twice, in the fourth quarter to beat the Bulldogs 25-28 in overtime out in Pennington.

But those weren’t the only big wins.

League win streaks stay in tact another week…

St. Thomas Aquinas and Bernards came into the 2025 season with the two longest win streaks against Big Central competition, and both extended their respective success by another game Friday night.

The fifth-ranked Trojans left no doubt in a 56-3 home win over Montclair, putting their streak at 32 games. Their last loss came on November 12, 2020, to Bernards.

The No. 4 Mountaineers were 27-15 winners over Cranford, behind three touchdown connections from Nolan Walsh to Sean Arcelay. After a John Fiore touchdown catch in the second quarter tied the game at seven, Walsh and Arcelay hooked up for the next three scores, going for 54-, 24- and 14-yard TD connections that gave Bernards a 27-7 lead.

Their league win streak is now at 24, with their last loss coming September 2, 2022 to Hillside.

Top Ten does well…

Besides Bernards and Aquinas, second-ranked Somerville and No. 8 Piscataway also won, though No. 7 Rahway lost 35-33 at home to Willingboro. Four of the five ranked teams in action Friday won, making it five of six in Week Zero overall.

The Chiefs had to rally to beat Edison, trailing the Eagles 14-10 early in the third quarter. But they scored 21 unanswered points to come out with a 31-14 win. Piscataway quarterback Landon Pernell threw three touchdowns in the game, and now both teams have a tough opponent next week. The Chiefs will visit Bridgewater-Raritan, which knocked off Notre Dame at home 35-20, while the Eagles will visit No. 9 Old Bridge, which visits Rowan University Saturday at 3 pm for a Battle at the Beach clash with Cedar Creek.

It wasn’t always easy, and for others it was. You never know what you’re going to get in Week Zero football, but nine Big Central Conference teams came out with wins in 15 games on the opening night of the 2025 high school football season.

In the Big Central Game of the Week presented by Bellamy & Son Paving, Spotswood got three touchdown runs and a TD pass from senior quarterback Se’mir Tolbert Brimage in a 38-0 shutout of Middlesex at home.

It was the first meeting between the formerly frequent GMC opponents since 2020, the first year of play in the Big Central. And it was the first game for the Chargers under the brand-new permanent lights installed late last year at their home field.

Just one Top Ten team played Thursday night: No. 3 Woodbridge was a 14-0 shutout winner over Union at home, getting a pair of touchdown runs – one in the first and one in the fourth quarter – from senior Josh Allen.
