Hear the dramatic final 15.5 seconds of the SCT Boys’ Final that gave Rutgers Prep its second county title

No time-outs for either team. This would be it. With 15-and-a-half second left, it would come down to this for Rutgers Prep.

After a turnover by Gill St. Bernard’s – which led 67-66 – the ball ended up in senior Cameron Piggee’s hands. And he made the most of it. He hit a runner in the lane, got fouled, made his free throw, and the rest as they say is history.

Rutgers Prep 69, Gill St. Bernard’s 67. The County championship to the Argonauts.

Piggee’s “and-one” with :02.9 left makes Rutgers Prep boys Somerset County Tournament Champions

Gill St. Bernard’s had double-digit leads in every quarter but the first, and Rutgers Prep led the game for just 2.9 seconds. But that was all they needed.

Senior Cameron Piggee gave the Argonauts their first lead of the game – with 2.9 seconds to go as he slashed through the lane, scored as he drew contact, then coolly hit his free throw, putting Prep up 69-67 in a game Gill led virtually wire-to-wire.

After the inbound, with no timeouts left, Gill’s Mario Castro-Sanchez heaved a 50-footer from the near sideline near mid-court, but it wasn’t close, completing a sweep by the Rutgers Prep girls and boys of the SCT.

Piggee finished with 20, including four three-point baskets. Junior Jadin Collins chipped in 16, and Senior Franklin Jones added 15 for Prep, which will head into the state tournament at 20-7.

Castro-Sanchez led the way for Gill (18-7) with 20 points, while junior Nick Losada added 19.

Rutgers Prep Head Coach Matt Bloom

Rutgers Prep’s Matt Bloom named CJSR Boys’ Coach of the Year after historic season

The first-ever sectional title in Rutgers Prep boys’ basketball history has earned Argonauts’ head coach Matt Bloom Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year Honors from Central Jersey Sports Radio.

They certainly reached new heights in 2022, getting contributions from so many players.

And Bloom is quick to deflect all praise to them: guys like Jadin Collins, Ryan Pettit, Cameron Piggee, Jordan Atkins and Ryan Zan.

So, Mike Pavlichko sat down not just with the head coach, but with Piggee and Atkins in the room, to get a sense of the player/coach/family dynamic Bloom has instilled at Prep.

Rutgers Prep boys’ advance in SCT, will look to “repeat” as champions

Yes, Rutgers Prep is looking for a repeat, two years later.

COVID-19 led to a shortened 2021 season, and a one-off Skyland Conference-wide pod postseason, so in this year is the next Somerset County Tournament final after 2020, and the Argonauts – who won that one – are back in it.

Second-seeded Prep (22-2) fairly easily handled third-seed Watchung Hills Thursday night in the SCT semis on Easton Avenue, pulling away from a 20-all tie in the second quarter to lead 39-26 at intermission.

The Argonauts were led by Ryan Zan’s 21 points and Cameron Piggee’s 19, while Ryan Pettit chipped in 12 and Jadin Collins added 11.

Next up, they get top-seed Gill St. Bernard’s (17-6), which cruised past Montgomery after a tight first quarter for a 65-49 win Thursday night. The final is 3pm Saturday, and you can hear the game live on Central Jersey Sports Radio.
