South Brunswick and Old Bridge to duel after Knights rallied late to win first meeting

The first time South Brunswick and Old Bridge played this year, it didn’t look good for the Knights, who were held to single digits in both the first and second quarters.

But like many other girls’ basketball games in the Red Division this year, in the end, it was highly competitive.

Old Bridge settled in at halftime, talked about their game plan, and how they hadn’t quite executed it, weren’t getting shots to fall. When they did, they got back into the game, and ultimately came out with a three-point win, 56-53, hitting key shots down the stretch, while getting key stops on the other end of the floor.

Tuesday night, the two meet again. Both are 9-9, with Old Bridge sixth in the Red at 4-8, tied with North Plainfield; the Vikings sit in fourth at 7-5, tied for third with East Brunswick. Which means Tuesday’s game most definitely has implications for GMC Tournament seeding, which happens Friday.

South Brunswick is a veteran group, led by three seniors. Alexis Lease-Springer is tops in nearly every offensive category, including scoring at a 15.3 point per game clip, and averaging nearly nine rebounds a game. She also leads in threes made (25), assists (55) and steals (60). Avery Jenne has 18 treys and is averaging 10.1 points per game, while Kendall Dixon is scoring 9.7 per game.

For Old Bridge, it’s senior Adrianna Miscigana (rhymes with “lasagna”) leading the Knights with 11.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Marilyn Togun – a sophomore – also has been a key presence for the squad.

Old Bridge looks to snap three-game losing streak when No. 8 Monroe visits

After winning three in a row in the Lady Chiefs Holiday Showcase, the Old Bridge girls basketball team find themselves back below .500, having dropped three of their last four.

And things don’t get any easier this week when No. 8 Monroe (8-0, 4-2 GMC Red) comes to town, with the Falcons havingq1 won their last two games by no less than 21 points each.

The good news is Old Bridge is home, and two of Monroe’s three losses this year have come away from home.

While points haven’t been easy to come by for Old Bridge, if the Knights want to come out on top they’re going to need senior and junior guards Abigail Jazmin and Adriana Misciagna to continue their consistent offensive play of nine points per game.

Last year these two teams faced off twice, with each team winning once. On December 17, Monroe won 46-40, and exactly one month later – around this time in 2024, ironically – Old Bridge got its revenge and came out on top 55-39. Will the same happen in 2024?

NOTE: This game was originally scheduled for 7 pm Tuesday, but has been postponed due to snow. Check back here for updates on when it will be rescheduled. Mike Pavlichko and Dylan Allen are on the call; click here to listen.

No. 8 Old Bridge girls try to regain momentum on road trip up Route 18 to face East Brunswick

Old Bridge head coach Alec Alspach says the losses aren’t always as bad as they seem, and sometimes the wins aren’t as good as they seem.

Certainly, he would have liked the season-opener against East Brunswick to be a little more comfortable, after his team raced out to a 14-0 lead. The won the game, but by a single possession, and it showed how tough the GMC Red Division would be this season.

Eighth-ranked Old Bridge (6-3, 5-2) and East Brunswick (9-2, 5-2) sit tied behind first-place St. Thomas Aquinas, but tonight’s winner will take sole possession of second place in the Greater Middlesex Conference red, a coveted spot when it comes time to seed the county tournament next month.

You can listen to tonight’s game live on Central Jersey Sports Radio, with Mike Pavlichko and Dom Savino calling all the action. Tip-off is set for 6 pm, with pregame at 6:45. Click here to listen.
