Let’s show some small school love as we head into Week Three and the heart of the high school football season in New Jersey. With three teams having double-digit win streaks snapped in the opening weeks of the season, Metuchen now has the second-best winning streak in the state, while Highland Park has won three in a row after ending its 51-game skid in its 2023 season finale.

It was an eventful first full week of play in the Big Central, as we saw 100 points scored between Bridgewater-Raritan and Piscataway, and JP Stevens snap its 42-game losing streak. Meanwhile, Highland Park – which snapped its 51-game skid last year – now has won two straight going back to that win over Point Pleasant Beach! Can they make it three?

We’re a little more than 48 hours from the start of the 2024 High School Football season, with a slew of Big Central teams in action on Week Zero, which begs the question: Why Week Zero? The playoffs are in full swing, and the public schools already are on to the sectional semifinal round! Ten Big Central teams will play this weekend for the right to go to the finals, with at least one guaranteed, coming out of the Westfield-Phillipsburg game in North2, Group 5. Plus, the non-public seeding nets home games for St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Joseph-Metuchen.
