In shootout win, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Ian Roberts runs all over to take Week 3 “Speedster of the Week” honors, presented by Higgins Speed Lab

In our newest feature this season, the Week One “Speedster of the Week” presented by Higgins Speed Lab in South Brunswick honors the top runningbacks in the Big Central Conference every week.

And the Week Three winner is Ian Roberts of St. Thomas Aquinas!

Friday night’s game was a track meet, shootout, anything you want to say to describe a game in which the teams combined for 102 points! It was a 57-45 win for St. Thomas, and a tight game late. But in a contest where big play followed big play for both schools, Roberts excelled with 262 yards on 28 carries, scoring two touchdowns in the victory. It tied for the highest point total Aquinas has scored since the Big Central Conference’s first season in 2020.

Higgins Speed Lab in South Brunswick was founded by Kyle Higgins, son of longtime Piscataway head coach and NJFCA Hall of Famer Dan Higgins. Kyle grew up around the program and remains a Chiefs’ assistant coach to this day. At Higgins Speed Lab, Kyle has developed a system to help athletes increase speed while in a competitive small group environment of similar age and skill.

They offer sport-specific training in football, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, volleyball, track, gymnastics, and tennis. And “speed” isn’t their only focus. They’ll also work on proper running mechanics, plyometrics, acceleration/deceleration, top speed, linear and multi-directional speed, first-step quickness, endurance, strength, coordination, mobility and injury prevention.

  • Logan Stevens, Bernards: 19 carries for 208 yards and 3 TDs in a 31-21 win at Voorhees
  • Shaun Jackson, Sayreviille: 18 carries for 197 yards and 4 TDs in a 28-14 home win over Hillsborough
  • Nick Salas, Roselle Park: 22 carries for 174 yards and 2 TDs in a 37-20 loss at Dayton
  • Michael Rogers, Franklin: 12 carries for 166 yards and 3 TDs in a 57-45 home loss to St. Thomas Aquinas
  • Tyler Fuscaldo, Dayton: 19 carries for 166 yards and 2 TDs in a 37-20 home win over Roselle Park
  • Zaire Young, Piscataway: 28 carries for 165 cards and 1 TD in a 16-8 non-conference home win over Ridgewood
  • A.J. Whitehead, New Providence: 23 carries for 154 yards and 1 TD in a 30-0 win at Metuchen
