For all the hand ringing over seeding and parity that existed this baseball season in the GMC Red and White divisions – its top two groupings – look who’s in the title game Saturday: 11th-seed Edison.
But those two divisions have been so close and so balanced all year, it might be hard to tell the difference between an 11-seed and the second seed.
So why should Edison have paid any attention to its number? Clearly it hasn’t, and here are the Eagles, ready to play for a record ninth Greater Middlesex Conference title, when they take on 5th seat St Joseph of Metuchen Saturday at Ray Cipperly Field in East Brunswick.
You can hear that game on Central Jersey Sports Radio with Mike Pavlichko and Justin Sontupe on the call. First pitch is set for 2 pm with pregame at 1:35. Click here to listen.
Connor Murphy, who was excellent in a shutout win over Middlesex, 3-0, in the semifinals, will be back on the hill again for Edison. Head coach Vinnie Abene is going with the hot hand, and there’s no doubt he’s throwing some of his best stuff at the perfect time of year.
It’s another example of a team that had to deal with some early injuries, adjustments after losing a star pitcher like Jaxon Appelman, and find its groove. That they’ve done, winners of nine straight heading into Saturday’s final.
