Devine, Young combine for 32 as No. 8 Middlesex girls run past JP Stevens

Senior Jess Devine was kept out of the scoring column for most of the first quarter Tuesday evening against JP Stevens, but that didn’t matter.

That’s because while Junior Alyssa Young scored the first eight points of the game, Devine was busy doing other things she does so well, like racking up most of the seven steals she had in the midst of the Blue Jay’s full-court press, which forced the Hawks to burn two time outs just 20 seconds apart not even halfway through the period.

Devine eventually got in the scoring column, and – like she does most nights – led No. 8 Middlesex with 19 points, while Young chipped in 13, in a 53-19 victory heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

The win puts Middlesex at 11-4, 7-2 in the Greater Middlesex Conference White Division, keeping pace with Spotswood for first place, after the Chargers eked one out over South Plainfield Tuesday.

Young scored twice from beyond the arc in her little 8-0 run, which set the tone early for Middlesex.

JP Stevens dropped to 3-10 with the loss, 2-8 in the GMC White. The Hawks were led by senior Amber White, who scored seven points.

The 19 allowed by Middlesex was a season-best performance, and the first time holding an opponent under 20 since a 53-16 home win over Dunellen on January 14, 2022.

They had held three prior opponents to under 20 points this year – one even coming in a loss, 28-27 to South Plainfield earlier this month.
