As St. Thomas Aquinas continues to win a lot of football games – including a league best 25 straight at the moment over Big Central opponents – not only have the Trojans moved up in divisions and faced tougher conference foes, they’re also challenging themselves with top-flight out-of-state competition.
This year, they’ll play two teams from Maryland, including Riverdale Baptist later this year. But in their season opener at Mount St. Joseph, the Trojans took a tough loss, falling 36-26 to the Gaels at Abessinio Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware Saturday afternoon.
It looked like it all might be over quickly, as Mount St. Joseph scored first and led 29-0 at the half. But that’s when head coach Tarig Holman put in freshman quarterback Zymere Weaver.
And he nearly brought his team all the way back.
The Trojans eventually got on the board twice in the third quarter – including a five-yard touchdown pass from Weaver to Chase Young – cutting it to 29-14 heading into the fourth.
But the Gaels added another touchdown to make it 36-14, and even though the Trojans answered back with two more scores to make it 36-26, they simply ran out of time for more.
