The Rutgers Prep baseball team got walked off last year in the Non-Public North B Final by St. Mary’s on a Saturday afternoon up in Rutherford.
This year, the Argonauts got ’em back.
Fifth-seed Rutgers Prep – three games under .500 heading into Thursday’s semifinal in North Jersey – did what it does best, no matter what it’s record, when the season is on the line: win.
Peter Wheeler took a no-hitter into the seventh, and Evan Laub closed it out, pitching the final 2/3 of an inning, after St. Mary had first and second and one out in their final at bat.
Rutgers Prep took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, and gave up one to the home team in the bottom of the inning, but that was it.
The Argonauts (12-14) will travel Saturday to North Edison – a much shorter jaunt – to take on second-seed St. Thomas Aquinas (18-8) for the Non-Public North B title. The Trojans beat third-seed Gill St. Bernard’s at home, 7-5, Thursday afternoon.
