We’ve had a 14-inning game, a no-hitter, and some big upsets in the 2024 Greater Middlesex Conference baseball tournament. Wednesday saw a six-run comeback win in the final at bat by South Plainfield. What else could happen?
Well, to the untrained eye, you’d think you have to wait until Saturday to find out. That’s when the GMC Tournament semifinals will be held at Ray Cipperly Field in East Brunswick.
Third-seed Old Bridge and 10th-seed Sayreville will face each other in the noon game, followed by top-seed South Plainfield and fifth-seed Edison in the second game, set for 2:30 pm. Both can be heard live on Central Jersey Sports Radio by clicking here.
But no, there’s more weirdness schedule for Thursday and Friday.
Both of those semifinal matchups feature teams from the GMC Red and White Division: Old Bridge out of the Red in one semifinal against Sayreville out of the White, and South Plainfield out of the Red Division against Edison out of the White.
The GMC schedules some regular season crossover games during the GMC Tournament.
Do you see where we’re going with this yet?
If not, sit down for this one.
South Plainfield has a crossover game scheduled today. They play Edison, a team they would play again in two days for a trip to the GMC Finals.
Bring up the jayvee guys.
But wait, there’s more.
Old Bridge has a crossover game Friday, their senior night. They play Sayreville, which they would play again in two days for a trip to the GMC Finals.
Head spinning yet?
Couldn’t these teams get together and mutually drop the game?
About the only thing those games might be worth are power points for state playoff contention, which may be a good enough reason to keep the games. Maybe both teams could agree to start their JV squads? Or maybe give the kid that always dreamed of pitching but didn’t have the arm a go.
Update: Old Bridge and Sayreville have done just that. Knights’ head coach Mike Donaghue confirmed to Central Jersey Sports Radio they’re moving the game to next week.
Edison coach Vinnie Abene says they also called the game off, though the Eagles are looking for another opponent, since they already had a field ready and umpires assigned. Just bring your bats and gloves and play!
But still. What are the odds?
