At 2-1 to start the season, coming off a loss to defending Somerset County Tournament champion Rutgers Prep, Watchung Hills probably felt pretty good about itself.

After three innings of their game against division foe Immaculata – which was 4-0 at the time, but with the first three of those wins coming down south against out-of-state competition – they probably still felt pretty good, building a 5-0 lead over the Spartans.

The rest of the game was all downhill from there.

The young Warriors gave up the next eight runs in the game, losing 8-5, but head coach Joe Tremarco firmly believes his team beat itself that day. Fortunately, they get another shot Tuesday.

That’s when Watchung Hills (5-4-1) welcomes in the 4th-ranked Spartans (9-0) in a Skyland Conference Raritan Division game that will feature two of the just three teams with above-.500 records in Somerset County, the third being 9-1 Bridgewater-Raritan. One of the more pleasant surprises this spring has been the emergence of sophomore Max Payne. the first baseman is hitting .522 on a team batting .308, tied for the team-lead in RBIs with senior Jason Wu, each having knocked in ten runs so far this season.
