Their matchups with Rutgers Prep have been mainly successful the last couple of years, and now the Montgomery baseball team just hopes Mother Nature is in a cooperative mood.
UPDATE: TODAY’S GAME HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN AND FIELD CONDITIONS. A MAKE UP DATE HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.
Montgomery may be just 1-4 on the year, but Rutgers Prep was 2-6 last season heading into the Somerset County Tournament and won the whole thing, so there’s certainly time to right the ship. And the Cougars have the horses to do it.
Steve Donahue is a versatile corner infielder and excellent pitcher, who’s committed to Seton Hall. Cole Schulberg – a catcher/first baseman – will be going to Centenary next year.
And then there’s Zack Shick, who played baseball his freshman year, then quit to focus on football, but is back for his senior year on the diamond. Veteran head coach Peter Mueller says his leadership has proven to be invaluable.
Dhruv Errla will get the start Friday afternoon for the Cougars. He threw six innings against North Royalton (OH), and while Mueller says he won’t overpower hitters, he can make life miserable for them. The problem in that game? The offense only mustered a single run in a 3-1 loss.
