The only team in the Greater Middlesex Conference to be undefeated in league play at 13-0, St. Thomas Aquinas has been awarded the top seed in the upcoming GMC Tournament.
The pick was unanimous, as were all the other seeds in the top eight, which receive byes from the play-in and preliminiary rounds to the first round, the round of 16.
The top four teams came from the GMC Red Division, with Aquinas followed by South Brunswick, Colonia and Monroe.
Edison, the GMC White Division champions, were seeded fifth, followed by Old Bridge and East Brunswick again out of the Red. By default, Spotswood was awarded the eighth-seed, as all division winners must be seeded in the top eight.
There was a caveat this year, however, since the Gold Division did not complete all its games, and a division winner is not yet official. Dunellen is 13-1, but Perth Amboy Magnet is 11-1 with three games remaining. So, the leader in the Gold was not guaranteed a top eight seed.
Play begins Saturday with the play-in round, featuring ten games this year with the addition of North Plainfield coming over from the Skyland Conference, and no teams opting out. The preliminary round is Monday, with the first round on Wednesday.
