Scary thought: Pioneers’ Barth is bigger, better and stronger

New Providence senior Charlie Barth (No. 32) lines up at runningback at preseason camp on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.

When one looks at Charlie Barth’s 2020 football stats, one has to look on both sides of the page.

On the offensive side, the New Providence standout rushed for 25 touchdowns in the midst of racking up 1,700 yards. He was second only to Cookie Desiderio in TDs per touch, and ranked in the top ten in the state.

On the defensive side of the ball, he led his team with 115 tackles – 16 percent of the team’s total.

That was good enough to earn him Central Jersey Sports Radio’s Two-Way Player of the Year award.

But in 2021, with the playoffs back in the picture after the COVID-shortened season, Barth is hungry, and looking for more. He’s so focused, he passed on playing lacrosse in the spring to focus on strength and conditioning.
