Spotswood, in the mold of its head coach, renews rivalry with East Brunswick in Commander’s Cup game at “The Swamp”

For anyone who knows Glenny Fredricks, the longtime Spotswood baseball coach, he epitomizes the tiny boro where he grew up.

Small, scrappy, gritty. Underdog mentality.

That’ll be the mindset of his Chargers, too, when they host East Brunswick Wednesday in Commander’s Cup XVI, for the Bill Thompson Memorial Trophy. It’s tied in with American Legion Post 25 in East Brunswick, where the late Thompson – a big baseball fan – was once their baseball adjutant for the post’s team.

Central Jersey Sports Radio will provide play-by-play of the game, beginning with a pregame show at 3:45, with first pitch at 4 pm. Click here to listen to the live broadcast.

Spotswood (13-5) had reeled off six straight wins before running into Middlesex, which won the Blue Division outright with a sweep of the Chargers this weekend, 10-0 Saturday at “The Swamp,” and 5-2 at home Monday afternoon.

East Brunswick (8-8) will be playing its third game in as many days as the Bears come off a win over Piscataway Monday, and host Westfield Tuesday afternoon.

Spotswood will throw junior Jackson Walsh (1-1, 3.41 ERA) against the Bears, and will look to get on base, then wreak havoc from there.

Monroe makes case for top GMCT seed with 12-9 road win at St. Joseph-Metuchen

After a 2-0 home loss to St. Joseph on Saturday, the Monroe Falcons desperately wanted another crack at it.

They took advantage Monday in Metuchen, winning a 12-9 slugfest that will make determining who gets the top seed in the upcoming GMC Tournament anything but an easy decision.

The teams split their regular season series, and share the GMC Red Division title. Now it will be up to the seeding committee, which will make its picks to seed the league tournament in a meeting that begins at 10 am Thursday at East Brunswick Tech High School.

Central Jersey Sports Radio will be there to provide all the latest.

In Monday’s game, ace Josh Weinstein didn’t have his best stuff, head coach Sean Field told his team, but he continued to battle through 3 1/3 innings before C.J. Wisniewksi came on. Though he gave up a couple of runs, he struck out six of the final nine batters he faced in the final three full innings to get the win.

Jacob Veczko had a big day at the plate for Monroe: 3-for-5 with a single, double, and a ground rouble double, knocking in five runs on the afternoon in a game that was error-prone for both sides, but more so for St. Joseph.

While St. Joe’s is 13-6 overall, and Monroe 12-4, the teams are both 11-3 in the GMC Red Division.

St. Joseph, Middlesex clinch division title shares, South Plainfield takes GMC White outright heading into final week before Tourney seeding

With wins Saturday afternoon, St. Joseph of Metuchen clinched at least a share of the GMC Red Division, while Middlesex staked its claim to at least part of the GMC Blue Division, heading into a critical week for league tournament seeding.

The GMC will draw out brackets for its conference tournaments Thursday morning at 10 am, with Central Jersey Sports Radio providing up-to-the-minute coverage. Follow us on Twitter at @cjsportsradio for all the details.

In a battle of the Falcons – and the top two teams in the GMC Red – St. Joseph came up with a 2-0 road win behind a three-hit gem from junior Andrew Goldan, who struck out six and didn’t walk a single Monroe hitter in throwing a complete game.

Josiah Brown’s RBI single in the top of the sixth gave St. Joe’s a 1-0 lead, and Tyler DelVecchio’s double in the seventh added an insurance run.

The teams will rematch on Monday in Metuchen at 4 pm. Should St. Joe’s win, they’d be the GMC Red Division Champions outright. Should Monroe win, they would clinch at least a share.

It’s expected the winner of the red would be the top seed in the GMC Tournament. A St. Joseph win Monday makes them a lock; a Monroe win would put a potentially difficult decision in the hands of the seeding committee.

Meanwhile, in Spotswood, Middlesex shutout the Chargers 10-0 in six innings. The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead into the fifth and exploded for eight runs – four apiece – in what turned out to be the final two innings of the game.

Raiden Yost led Middlesex with a 2-for-3 afternoon and four runs batted in, while Ryan Vollmer, Robert Ulmer, and Anthony Long each knocked in two runs.

Kenny Yonker pitched a complete game two-hitter for the Jays, striking out ten, walking one, and allowing just two Spotswood hits in the six-inning victory.

While those two divisions still must bet settled, the White was settled today, while the Gold was determined Friday.

South Plainfield went into the weekend needing one win to take the GMC White Division championship, and they got it. The Tigers beat Sayreville in a rescheduled game from earlier in the year 6-1 at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater.

As for the GMC Gold, East Brunswick Tech clinched at least a share of the division title with its 12-5 win over Timothy Christian Wednesday afternoon, as heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio. They took the crown outright when they finished the sweep Friday with a 16-1 win in Piscataway.

EB Tech is the only GMC team to finish the year with a perfect divisional record, at 10-0.

Instant Replay: EB Tech bats explode in 5th to beat Timothy Christian 12-5

East Brunswick Tech saw its early 3-0 lead erode, but the Tigers stormed back with a six-run fifth inning to beat Timothy Christian Tuesday 12-5, clinching at least a share of the GMC White Division title.

Now 10-1 overall, 9-0 in the division, EB Tech got a solid relief outing from sophomore Scott Pede, didn’t allow a hit over the final three innings and got the win.

Pede seemed to get stronger as the game wore on, striking out the side in the seventh inning to end the ballgame.

East Brunswick Tech clinches share of GMC Gold with 12-5 win over Timothy Christian

Sophomore Scott Pede struck out five – including the side in the 7th inning – and helped East Brunswick Tech (10-1) clinch at least a share of the GMC Gold Division with a 12-5 win over Timothy Christian Tuesday afternoon at Ray Cipperly Field.

In a game heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio, ace starter Joe Moye struggled to find the plate early. He’d already been put on a 50-pitch limit by head coach Todd Sak, who wanted to save him a bit for Friday’s rematch against TCS in Piscataway.

With one out in the third, Pede came in the game from second base, and took over.

Even though he allowed two more Timothy Christian runs in the fourth, to allow the visiting Tigers to take a 5-4 lead, he settled down once EB Tech sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth to regain a lead the home Tigers would never relinquish.

Pede finished strong, not allowing a single hit over the last three innings, striking out the five, six and seven hitters to end the game.

East Brunswick Tech puts perfect divisional record on the line when Timothy Christian comes to town

For a program that didn’t cut anyone this year – not having a jayvee team – East Brunswick Tech has managed pretty well.

The Tigers are 9-1 – their lone blemish coming to Metuchen – and undefeated in the GMC White Division (8-0) heading into Tuesday afternoon’s matchup with Timothy Christian (4-3).

While Todd Sak is coaching his 12th season at EB Tech, he is less sure what to expect from the other Tigers, who are in their first season under head coach Josh Decker, who was actually hired in the winter of 2020 but didn’t get to coach last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

East Brunswick Tech is led by an offense that has scored at least 10 runs in seven of its nine victories this year, including 22 or more runs three times, with a season best effort in a 27-2 win at Wardlaw-Hartridge on April 26th.

Audio: Listen to all Dom LaPelosa’s 15 Ks from Edison’s win over Colonia

After his eight pitch, two-minute long top of the first inning, Dom LaPelosa knew he had it going on.

The senior Edison pitcher, who like to work quickly, made short work of Colonia’s hitters over the first three innings, at one point striking out seven straight Patriots.

He ended the game with 15 Ks – 6 of which were caught looking – as Edison topped Colonia 3-2 in a GMC White Division home game.

Timothy Christian hopes to keep putting up runs, make a statement at EB Tech

After dropping three of its first four games for first-year head coach Josh Decker, Timothy Christian has won three straight games heading into a big home-and-home divisional series that starts Wednesday afternoon at East Brunswick Tech.

In a battle of Tigers, the teams will square off for the first time this season at 4 pm Tuesday at Ray Cipperly Field, in a game that can be heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio. Mike Pavlichko will call all the action, and you can listen to the game by clicking here.

Part of the reason for Timothy’s success of late has been the offensive production, which has generated 39 runs in the last three games, including 20 and 13 in a home-and-home sweep of Wardlaw-Hartridge.

Edison tops Colonia 3-2 to split home-and-home

Edison salvaged a two-game, home-and-home series with Colonia by picking up a 3-2 win behind a 15-strikeout performance from senior Dom LaPelosa.

Included in that total were six Patriots who struck out looking, as LaPelosa painted the corners all afternoon and kept Colonia hitters off balance.

The Eagles (8-5) also got a three-run inside the park home run from sophomore catcher Charlie Taub, his first high school home run of any kind.

LaPelosa’s 15 Ks, Taub’s inside the park HR power Edison

Senior Dom LaPelosa gave up a run each in the fourth and fifth innings, but mowed down 15 Colonia batters, while sophomore catcher Charlie Taub’s three-run inside-the-park home run gave Edison enough to beat the visiting Patriots 3-2 in a GMC White Division home game heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

LaPelosa – who works quickly – threw six-innings of four-hit ball for the Eagles (8-5), and only walked two batters. At one point, he had struck out seven in a row, including the last two batters of the first inning, the side in the second, and the first two hitters of the third inning. Of the 15 Ks, six went down looking.

Colonia (5-6) got out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by catcher Frank Milone, but Edison got three in the bottom of the frame, when Taub’s one-out, two-on line drive to center was misplayed by Harrison Brindley.

The ball went all the way back to the wall – 425 feet from the plate- and Taub scored when the relay throw was cut off at the mount by Rutgers-bound first baseman J.T. Kroner.

Colonia picked up another run in the fifth on an RBI single by shortstop Chris Waldron, but that was as close as the Pats would get. LaPelosa struck out Kroner to end the inning, then two more batters in the sixth.

The game also saw two defensive web gems by Edison. The first ended the sixth when left fielder Nico Lopez dove to grab a fly ball down the line. He ended up in the corner by the foul line, and it appeared the ball was foul when it was caught by Lopez to end the inning.

The second was even more dramatic and ended the game. Right fielder Kyle Tkaczyszyn led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and advanced into scoring position at second on a sac bunt by nine-hitter Ivan Quiles.

After Harrison Brindley struck out – the 16th Colonia strikeout victim in the game – Chris Waldron drilled a 1-0 pitch to right field, where Just Rivera came on strong, splayed out, and caught the ball on a dive to end the ballgame.
