For second-seeded Woodbridge, their two stars Bryan Anderson and Derek Anderson – as they have been all year – were so in sync in the Barrons 35-15 win over Watchung Hills in the North Jersey 2 Group 4 quarterfinals, one would think they’d grown up playing together all their lives.

Oh right, that’s because they have! The twins made a big impact yet again, as all five of Derek’s completions went to Bryan, for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Bryan also had several key punt returns and intercepted a pass on defense, truly doing it all on all three sides of the ball in the victory.

The Barrons move on to play third-seed Northern Highlands at home next Friday night, after they blanked 6th-seed Westfield 21-0. Woodbridge last met the Highlanders in the 2019 North 1, Group 1 final up in Allendale, a 37-7 defeat.

Woodbridge’s run game sparked the scoring explosion to start. After a scoreless seven minutes of action as neither team could gain an edge, running back Shamar Wells burst right up the middle for a 77-yard touchdown run to open up the scoring. Running back Jahmir Beal also got in on the action, scoring two touchdowns from five yards out on back-to-back possessions. He finished the game with seven carries for 31 yards and the two scores.

The main catalyst for the Barrons’ offensive attack was good field position, sparked by their defense. Woodbridge had multiple drives start past midfield, including a one-play drive from the Watchung Hills five-yard line, thanks to a Bryan Anderson 37-yard punt return.

The Barrons also were able to force turnovers, including an interception by defensive lineman Jhonny Collado after a deflected screen pass. Anderson and the rest of the team’s defensive backs were all over Watchung Hills’ receivers, limiting quarterback Mason Kelly to 11-for-31 passing with 96 yards and an interception.

However, Kelly did get on the board late, as the Warriors dialed up some trick plays late with the game in hand. They converted a late fourth down with a reverse to wide receiver Aaron Williams, and on the ensuing play running back Evan Williams took a direct snap and found Kelly open in the end zone for their first score of the game.

Woodbridge will be back in action next week, as they will take on third-seeded Northern Highlands, who defeated Westfield 21-0 tonight.
